Jon Ann Alex has sold various cowhide products for years at the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo. She has one location at the NRG Center, and another in the Stadium.

Vendors have been setting up their booths at the NRG Center for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo which officially begins on Tuesday.

The center will be packed with vendors selling food, jewelry, apparel, art, and more, with many of the vendors selling Western-themed items.

Jon Ann Alex has sold cowhide products at the rodeo for years. She said while she does not depend on this rodeo, she estimates at least 15% of her sales usually come from this time of year.

“Saturdays are always really busy (at the rodeo). Especially when more students come,” she said. “And it depends on the concert a lot of times. The second Saturday is always the busiest.”

Alex added that Black Heritage Month and Go Tejano Day usually bring in larger crowds. The Rodeo brought a total economic impact of $227 million in 2019.

Bob Brown is a Boston-based vendor selling at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for the first time. He offers various types of glass ornaments, including glass chickens. He said he’s had stores in the past in Chicago and Boston, but has preferred traveling around instead.

“You’re always anxious about people coming and finding your location,” he said.

Brown said he’s made a livelihood at rodeos and state fairs for years.

“It’s a challenge, you’re on the road a lot. You get tired of fair food,” he said. “But for me, it’s the (most fun) type of retail. It’s not like doing anything in a mall. You are out with people who want to have a good time and want to find different and unique things.”

Last week, county and city officials kicked off festivities with Harris County’s first “Hat Toss Day” and Go Texan Day. Trail riders traveled throughout the week and arrived for the parade last Saturday. The rodeo will continue until March 17.
